A Menu Is Not a Meal
There is a man who has never once been trapped, and it has ruined his entire life.
He is careful. He keeps his options open. He does not commit to the job, not fully, because a better one might come and he does not want to be tied down. He does not commit to the place, because he might want to be somewhere else. He does not go all in on the relationship, the craft, the calling, the risk — because going all in means closing other doors, and closing doors is the one thing he cannot bring himself to do. He keeps every path available. He calls it freedom. He calls it staying smart, staying flexible, keeping his powder dry.
Watch him for twenty years and you see what it actually was.
He is fifty now and he has a hundred options and nothing built. Every door still cracked, and not one of them walked through. He kept the whole menu open his entire life and never ordered, and now the kitchen is closing and he is realizing, slowly, that a menu is not a meal. He did not preserve his possibilities. He hoarded them until they spoiled. All that optionality he was so proud of protecting turned out to be worth exactly nothing, because possibility you never spend is just a more sophisticated way of having nothing at all.
Here is what he never understood. He thought sacrifice was the enemy of a full life. It was the price of one. Every meaningful thing he might have had was on the other side of a door he refused to close — a real commitment, a real cost, a real giving-up of the alternatives. And because he would not pay that cost, he never got any of it. He protected his options so well that he protected himself right out of a life.
The cruelest part is that it looked wise the whole way through. At thirty it looked like patience. At forty it looked like prudence. Only at the end does it resolve into what it always was — a man so afraid of choosing wrong that he never chose at all, and called his cowardice freedom.
Now look up from him, because you already know why I am telling you this.
You have doors you will not close. Options you are protecting that are quietly costing you the very thing they are options for. Some commitment you keep almost making — the one you know you should go all in on — held at arm's length so you do not have to give up the alternatives you are never going to use anyway.
Close the door. Order off the menu. Pay the cost and get the meal.
Because you can keep every option open right up until the end, and arrive there having done what he did — protected a hundred lives you might have lived, and lived none of them.
Spend it. That is the only way it was ever worth anything.
