Author the Gratitude
Gratitude is not a feeling that visits you. It is a thing you author.
The negative thoughts will come without invitation. They always do — the grievance, the lack, the thing that went wrong replaying itself for free. Left alone, they erode you. They convince you the world is thin and owes you more than it gave.
It is a lie, and you do not have to sign it.
Because the abundance is real and it is already here. You just have to choose to see it against the pull of the complaint. That choosing is work. It is the same discipline as everything else — you do not wait to feel grateful any more than you wait to feel like training. You direct your attention to what is true and good, on purpose, until it holds.
I have the proof on file. Time with my father. Memories that no loss can repossess, because they already happened and they were good.
And here is the floor it all stands on. My happiness is not outsourced. It does not live in other people's hands, their moods, their approval. I answer to myself first — and the man I answer to is building something specific.
A life of integrity. A story my wife and children can be proud of when they read it.
That is the work. Not to feel grateful. To author a life worth being grateful for.
