Love of Labor
You try to celebrate the win. You tell yourself it is allowed, that you have earned the pause, that a normal man would savor this. And you do savor it — for a breath.
But if you are honest, the celebration was always a little bit of a costume. The truth is quieter and stranger: you did not want the trophy nearly as much as you wanted the climb. The finish line was never where your joy lived. The work was.
Stop pretending otherwise.
You find your deepest satisfaction not in the reward but in the labor that earns it — in the grind, the problem, the long hard stretch where you are fully engaged and fully alive. The manufactured celebration at the end is the fake part. The honest joy already happened, quietly, in the middle of the work, where no one thought to look for it.
Quit apologizing for it. Quit forcing a joy you do not feel to match a script written for someone wired differently. Not everyone finds their peak on the summit. Some find it on the wall, mid-climb, and there is nothing broken about that. It is just how you are made.
Embrace it. Your joy is in the work. Say it plainly and stop pretending the party was ever the point.
Joy in the work means you are fully present in the labor and it feeds you. You wake for that moment each day.
And it does not mean you cannot be still with the people you love — hold that line, and you keep the best of both.
But there are voices. They come for you and they drag you back into the fire, and you want them to come, because you love their sound. For some men, that pull looks like a hamster wheel with no peace. For you, it is the peace. The fire is where you rest.
So be honest with yourself, and then stop arguing with your own nature. The job is never done. It never will be. That is not a sentence to grieve — it is the reason there is always more of the thing you love waiting for you tomorrow.
Be fully, gladly absorbed in the work.
And stop performing a stillness you do not feel for people who were never wired the way you are.
There are many of them.
You were not built to be one of them.
