Winter Training

Living in Southern California, there isn’t much seasonality in the weather. And perhaps because of that, there’s less appreciation, or complacency, for the seasons of life…

Technically, it’s the winter season here right now and for me a time of reflection and preparation.

I recently came across a term—winter training—used in ancient times to describe the preparation done during the cold months for a decisive battle ahead. Winter wasn’t idle time. It was when warriors sharpened skills, strengthened bodies, and prepared their minds.

Maybe you’re in winter training right now.
Maybe you’re in the middle of a decisive battle.
Or maybe this is a quiet, calm season.

Whatever season you’re in, understand this: preparation never stops.

Prepare in the calm.
Prepare in the cold.
Prepare even in the chaos.

Ready yourself—mentally and physically—for the next day, the next season, the next moment. Life doesn’t announce what’s coming, and it won’t slow down for you.

Don’t get caught flat-footed and run over. Stay ready.

“The more you sweat in training, the less you bleed in battle.” — Military proverb
