Worth Following

Nobody has to follow you anymore.

For most of history, a leader held leverage. People followed because leaving was expensive or impossible — you needed the job, the institution, and the door out was heavy and far away. A mediocre man could sit in a title for years and still be obeyed, because his people had nowhere better to go.

That world is gone. The people you want to lead can leave, switch, quit, go independent, find another path by the end of the week. The exit is always open and always in view. The leverage is gone with it. Nobody follows you because they are trapped, because almost no one is trapped anymore.

The only leadership left is the kind people choose. Given, not taken — and a thing that is given can be withdrawn. It has to be earned again every morning, not won once and banked. You do not have followers. You have people deciding, today and every day, whether you are still worth it. The title on your door guarantees you nothing. You are auditioning continuously, whether you feel it or not.

Positional authority is a loan the modern world has stopped extending. Whatever you cannot earn, you no longer get to keep.

Become worth following, and be specific about it. See what is great in your people — the potential they cannot see in themselves — and develop it, so that being led by you makes them larger than they were. Go first: never demand a standard you do not live or a risk you will not take yourself. People follow the man who goes first, and they smell the one who only points. And give them something worth their hearts and minds, because talented people do not spend their best on a paycheck. They spend it on a purpose, or they do not spend it at all.

Do that, daily, and people follow you into hard things because you have made following you the best use of their one finite life. That is the only authority left, and the only kind worth having.

Then close the notebook. A journal full of who you intend to become is not becoming — it is a nicer place to keep the same excuses.

Go earn it. Today, and every day, because that is the only way it is earned now.
