A Privilege, Not a Right

You are entitled to nothing.

Not their time. Not their attention. Not their loyalty or their presence or a single minute of their finite life. You do not earn the right to any of it, because there is no right — there was never anything owed to you, no matter what you have done or who you are.

There is only the privilege. And a privilege is granted, freely, by someone who could have chosen otherwise.

Every person has agency, and every person's time is finite and running out. So when someone chooses to spend a portion of it on you — an hour, an evening, their full attention — they are not fulfilling an obligation. They are handing you an irreplaceable piece of a life they will never get back. It cost them. They chose to pay it . That is the honor, and most people are too entitled to even see it.

The privilege of another person's finite attention demands that you show up worthy of it — every time, with everyone.

They owed you nothing.

They gave you something anyway.

Do not make them regret the spend.
