Know How

What have you overcome in this life? Name the thing that didn’t break you.

If you cannot, your character is mere theory. You may believe you are disciplined, resilient, steady under pressure — but nothing has tested it, so nothing is proven. Adversity is the only thing that turns a claim about your character into a fact.

Do you know how you overcame it?

Overcoming is not enough. If you came through something hard but cannot say how — which decisions carried you, what held when everything pushed — you did not learn. You survived. And survival you cannot explain, you cannot repeat. You got a result you have no idea how to reproduce, so the next hard thing finds you exactly as unequipped as the last.

This trap causes people to wave off their wins as self-explanatory. It worked, move on. The lesson inside the victory goes unclaimed, and the win makes them nothing but lucky — one more time, and dependent on luck the next.

Audit your wins, not just your losses. When you come through something, take it apart while it is fresh. What did you actually do? What would you repeat on purpose? Pull the method out of the result — the result is temporary, the method is yours to keep.

Overcoming proves you have something.

Knowing how lets you keep it.
